Villa Maritima in San Simon – Heritage Studies and Archaeological Park

Irena Lazar (SLO)

The University of Primorska Faculty of Humanities in Koper (Slovenia) offers four Bologna programs with the topic of heritage and heritage studies. The important part of the study and students training is practical work on the sites and monuments. One of the sites where students collaborate and develop their understanding of heritage protection and management is villa maritima in Simonov zaliv. The residential part of the villa stretches across a surface of 3000 m2; the living quarters are arranged around an inner courtyard, while the whole complex is connected by a portico to the port. The harbour of the villa in Simonov zaliv is one of the largest on the western coast of Istria, covering a surface of over 7,000 m2.

Students collaborate on the site during excavations, summer workshops, they work as guides, help to organise public events etc. The lecture will present the ongoing projects of villa maritima and our work on the future archaeological park. The important focus of the programme is cooperation between research, study programmes and local community.
